New Gemini Feature: Now we're talking!
Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations straight from the chat.
Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations straight from the chat.
We have been watching the fierce competition in the AI sector for some time now. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about how models like Claude have taken the lead, especially in complex programming tasks and agent creation. However, Google has just made a move with a Gemini update that completely changes the way we work. We are no longer limited to receiving plain text responses that we then have to copy and paste; now, Gemini can generate, manage, and connect actual files directly from its chat window. This deep integration with Google Workspace removes middle steps, saves time, and transforms the AI into a true administrative assistant.
You can watch the original video where I put all these features to the test here:
The ecosystem advantage: Beyond text
The biggest difference this functionality brings is zero friction. When we ask an artificial intelligence to structure information for us, the logical next step is usually to move that information into a word processor, a spreadsheet, or a presentation. Google has understood this perfectly.
Key highlights of this update include:
Native multi-format creation: The ability to instantly generate Google Docs, spreadsheets (Sheets, Excel, CSV), slide presentations, and technical formats such as Markdown, Python, JSON, or SQL.
Two-way Workspace connection: Gemini doesn't just export to your Google Drive account; it can search through your existing files, read them, and generate new content based on them.
Advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR): The capability to process images, such as photos of printed receipts, and extract their data into accurately tabbed tables.
Batch generation: The possibility of asking the AI to create multiple files in different formats with a single command or prompt.
Practical use cases for your daily routine
To really understand the impact of this update, it's best to see how it applies to everyday scenarios. When testing the tool, the results are quite revealing about where productivity is headed.
1. Writing and editing in Google Docs
Imagine you need to research a specific topic, such as the expectations and rumors for the next Google tech event. Instead of asking for a summary in the chat, you can now write: "Create a Google Doc with everything you find." Gemini gathers the information and presents you with a pre-formatted document. You can preview it in the chat itself or open it directly in Google Docs. Additionally, if you have the paid version, the AI integrates directly into the document so you can request modifications on the fly, such as changing the tone of the headline to something more engaging.
2. From text to presentation in seconds
Once you have your text document structured, the next logical step in many work environments is to present it. Without leaving the chat, you can ask Gemini: "Using this information, create a presentation for me." Using its internal design engine, the AI generates slides based on the previous text. You can modify colors, ask it to add icons, or request AI-generated images to illustrate your ideas. When it's to your liking, a simple click exports the entire job to Google Slides, ready to share.
3. Expense tracking and data extraction (OCR)
This is perhaps one of the most useful applications for freelancers or personal home finance management. If you have several grocery receipts, simply upload photos of the receipts to the chat and ask: "Create an Excel file with all detailed expenses: item, price, date, and store." Gemini reads the images, breaks down taxes, amounts, and products, and returns a structured Excel, CSV, or Google Sheet, saving you the tedious task of manual data entry.
4. Creating visual dashboards
Having data in a table is great, but visualizing it is better. With the receipt information already processed, you can ask Gemini to generate an interactive dashboard. In just a few seconds, it presents bar charts and diagrams showing total spending, average per receipt, or which store you spent most at. It even allows you to interact with the panel to add new data manually and update the charts in real-time.
5. Cross-searching and report generation (PDF)
Workspace integration truly shines here. You can give Gemini a complex instruction like: "Search my purchase receipts in Google Sheets and create a PDF detailing where I've spent the most on food and where I can save." The AI crawls your Drive autonomously, locates the correct spreadsheet, analyzes the data, and generates a perfectly formatted PDF report with the answer.
6. Technical formats and bulk generation
For more technical profiles, Gemini also allows for the creation of code or rich text files. You can ask it, for example, to set up a Markdown (.md) file for a specific project. But what's most curious is its parallel processing capability. If you ask it to create 20 random files simultaneously, each with a different format (RTF, PDF, Excel, Doc, PowerPoint, Java, Python, TXT, SQL, JSON) and including a joke, the tool compiles them all at once in a matter of seconds, ready for download.
Conclusion
It's clear that tools like Claude remain favorites for very specific software development or complex writing tasks. However, for the average user looking to optimize their workflow, Google's proposal is unbeatable in terms of convenience. Gemini's multimodal model, combined with the removal of barriers between the chat and the file system, makes our lives much easier.
Being able to centralize research, slide design, data extraction, and report creation in a single window is a very practical advancement. If you are already a Gemini user (even the free version, where many of these Workspace features are active), I encourage you to start directly asking for the files you need instead of just chatting with it in the traditional way.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have you tried generating documents this way yet? What do you think of this integration compared to other assistants? Let me know in the comments.
